Description

A determined reformer steps into a bustling state legislature, intent on turning his homeland into a model of progress. Humphrey Crewe rallies lawmakers, industry leaders, and ordinary citizens alike, staging hearings that swell beyond the chambers and spill into the public eye. His relentless advocacy wins the support of farmers, road builders, and even distant delegates, yet the bills he champions keep slipping back into committee under the watchful eyes of entrenched politicians.

Meanwhile, a powerful lumber magnate, Tom Gaylord, fumes over rising timber costs and hatches a daring plan to reroute a railroad through the valley, threatening the delicate balance of commerce and politics. As Crewe’s idealism collides with Gaylord’s ruthless ambition, both men find themselves entangled in a web of lobbying, secret deals, and looming confrontation. Listeners are drawn into the early struggle of vision versus vested interest, setting the stage for a gripping clash of principles and power.

About the author

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill

1871–1947

Best known for historical novels that once drew a huge American readership, this Winston Churchill was a very different figure from the British statesman who shared his name. His books mixed adventure, politics, and social observation, and several became major bestsellers in the early 1900s.
