CHAPTER VIII
In a rapidly industrializing New England, Edward Bumpus finds his life uprooted like a stone dislodged from a glacier. Once rooted in the venerable town of Dolton, his education and modest clerkship give way to a series of unstable jobs, culminating in his role as gate‑keeper at the massive Chippering Mill in Hampton. The novel paints his bewilderment as he watches the familiar world of churches, traditions, and family crumble around him, replaced by the noisy, smoky sprawl of a river‑side city.
Through Edward’s eyes we glimpse the clash of old‑world Puritan values with the chaotic modernity of factories, immigrant neighborhoods, and shifting social hierarchies. As he wrestles with the loss of the stable “rock” of his upbringing, his internal struggle raises a simple yet profound question: how does one find footing when the very ground beneath them is forever changing?

1871–1947
A hugely popular American novelist in the early 1900s, he wrote historical fiction and political novels that spoke to the mood of Progressive Era readers. Though often overshadowed by the better-known British statesman of the same name, his books were major bestsellers in their day.
