CHAPTER XIX - A MAN OF DESTINY
A young Maryland gentleman finds himself flung aboard a brigantine’s long‑boat, drenched and bewildered, when a sudden rescue saves him from the sea. The sailor who pulls him aboard is a towering, red‑bearded captain with a sharp eye and a voice that swings between rough bark and courtly polish. Their brief exchange—mistaken for death, then recognized as a gentleman in misfortune—sets the stage for an unlikely alliance.
The captain, a French‑styled merchant mariner named Paul, treats his rescued guest with a generosity that borders on theatrical, offering brandy, fine clothing, and a place in his cabin. As the ship pulls away, the protagonist is thrust from ragged poverty into the polished world of a seafaring elite, his curiosity sparked by the captain’s mysterious past and the promise of adventure across the West‑India trade routes. The opening promises a journey where loyalty, danger, and identity will be tested on the high seas.

A hugely popular American novelist in the early 1900s, he wrote historical fiction and political novels that spoke to the mood of Progressive Era readers. Though often overshadowed by the better-known British statesman of the same name, his books were major bestsellers in their day.
