Description

In the quiet village of Coniston, the arrival of a weather‑worn widower transforms a modest cottage by the disused tannery into a home of unexpected tenderness. Jethro Bass, returning to his family’s old dwelling, takes on the care of young Cynthia, the child of his late friend, while the village rector steps in as her reluctant tutor. Their days unfold beneath the shade of a butternut tree, where Cynthia reads aloud the treasured books of her father and, in turn, awakens a dormant love for literature in the otherwise unlettered Jothro.

The modest routine of lessons, horse‑drawn errands, and summer rides along the rolling hills is tinged with a quiet yearning that neither fully acknowledges. As Cynthia grows, she asks simple yet profound questions—“What is a mortgage?”—that hint at a larger world beyond the village bounds. Listeners will be drawn into the gentle rhythms of rural life and the subtle, unspoken currents that shape the hearts of those who share its simple pleasures.

About the author

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill

1871–1947

A hugely popular American novelist in the early 1900s, he wrote historical fiction and political novels that spoke to the mood of Progressive Era readers. Though often overshadowed by the better-known British statesman of the same name, his books were major bestsellers in their day.
