About the author

Born William Fitzgerald Jenkins in Norfolk, Virginia, Murray Leinster became one of the most productive popular writers of the twentieth century. He wrote in several genres, but he is especially remembered for science fiction, publishing well over a thousand stories and articles over a career that stretched from the pulp-magazine era into the 1970s.

His work is often praised for its lively pace and inventive ideas. He is closely associated with the 1934 story Sidewise in Time, widely noted as an early landmark in alternate-history fiction, and with "First Contact," a famous tale of meeting aliens that helped set the pattern for many later stories.

Leinster's career was remarkably broad: beyond fiction for magazines and books, he also wrote for radio and television. That range, combined with his steady imagination and clear storytelling, has kept his work visible long after the pulp era that first made him famous.
