About the author

Born William Fitzgerald Jenkins on June 16, 1896, in Norfolk, Virginia, he wrote as Murray Leinster and became one of the most productive pulp-era American authors. Over the course of his career he published more than 1,500 short stories and articles, along with novels, scripts, and other fiction, building a reputation for clear storytelling and big speculative ideas.

He is especially associated with science fiction, though he also wrote in several other popular genres. Among his best-known works are "First Contact" and "Sidewise in Time," stories often noted for their lasting influence on later science fiction, including ideas connected with first-contact diplomacy and alternate history.

Leinster continued publishing for decades and remained a familiar name to magazine readers through the mid-20th century. He died on June 8, 1975, and his work still stands as a lively link to the adventurous, fast-moving world of classic American science fiction.
