On the frozen valley of Lani III, newly‑minted survey officer Massy awakens to a biting cold that seeps through the thin walls of his cabin. The ice‑capped peaks loom like silent sentinels while a weak heater hums, reminding him that this colony is anything but what his training prepared him for. Having trekked tropical worlds and temperate moons, he now faces a planet rated barely habitable, where even summer hovers just below zero.
Complicating the desolate beauty is a puzzling transmission that has broken through the usual communication blackout. A crackling, one‑note whine flickers on the frequency, its pattern too regular to be random noise yet impossible to decode. As Massy and the younger officer Herndon stare at the erratic beam, they realize the signal may hold the key to the colony’s survival—or to a danger they have yet to understand.
