Lauri Haarla was born in Korpilahti on February 18, 1890, and died in Helsinki on October 24, 1944. He was a Finnish writer and a teacher of history and Finnish, and he also worked as a school leader in Helsinki.
He made his literary debut with poetry after the Finnish Civil War, and he became known as a versatile author who wrote poems, novels, and especially plays. Finnish reference sources describe him as an expressionist, and his historical dramas and novels are often linked with a strong national outlook.
Alongside his writing, Haarla spent much of his life in education. That combination of teacher and author helps explain the character of his work: intellectually shaped, historically minded, and deeply engaged with the emotional and political struggles of his time.
