VELISURMAAJAT
LAURI HAARLA
Set in the stark wilderness of 15th‑century northern Finland, the play opens inside the cramped, timber‑walled hall of Ilmola. Sunlight filters through a shrouded window, illuminating a mixture of rough‑hewn furniture, animal‑skin tapestries and a towering hearth that smells of pine smoke. The stage is alive with the chatter of locals—Finnish farmers, Sami mystics, and wandering traders—each hinting at the tangled loyalties that bind this remote community. A palpable tension hangs over the room, as ancient customs clash with the growing influence of the new ruling class.
At the heart of the drama are two women whose worlds could not be more different. Rauni, a young Sami with a haunting lullaby on her lips, occupies a simple bench while the proud, pale‑skinned Johanna arrives in a finely stitched Häme costume, her voice cutting through the air with sharp admonitions. Their conversation quickly turns to family honor, forbidden love, and the looming responsibility of a son whose future may upend generations. As accusations swirl and old grievances are recalled, the audience can feel the first tremors of a tragedy that threatens to engulf both house and heritage.
