Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, was born in London on May 25, 1803, and died on January 18, 1873. He became one of the most widely read English writers of his era, working across fiction, poetry, drama, history, essays, and journalism. He also served in public life as a politician and edited the New Monthly Magazine for a time.
His varied career produced popular novels such as Pelham, Paul Clifford, Eugene Aram, The Last Days of Pompeii, and Rienzi. Writing under names including Lord Lytton, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and the pseudonyms Pisistratus Caxton and Owen Meredith, he developed a reputation for vivid storytelling and a richly dramatic style.
