About the author
Born in London on May 25, 1803, he became a remarkably prolific English novelist, playwright, poet, and politician. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, began publishing early, and went on to produce a large body of popular fiction that made him a literary celebrity in the 19th century.
His novels ranged from society satire and historical fiction to occult and sensational tales, with works such as Pelham, The Last Days of Pompeii, Rienzi, and Zanoni helping build his reputation. Although modern readers often know him for a few famous lines more than for his full books, his stories had a strong influence on Victorian popular fiction and stage culture.
Alongside his writing, he served in Parliament and later became Secretary of State for the Colonies. He was created Baron Lytton and remained a visible public figure until his death in Torquay on January 18, 1873.
