About the author
Born in 1803, this English writer built an unusually public career in both literature and politics. He served in Parliament and was later created 1st Baron Lytton, but his lasting reputation rests on the sheer range of his writing: novels, plays, poems, essays, and criticism.
He was one of the most popular authors of his day, known for energetic, plot-driven books such as Pelham, The Last Days of Pompeii, Rienzi, and A Strange Story. His fiction moved easily between fashionable society, ancient history, crime, and the occult, which helps explain why his work reached such a broad audience.
Although tastes changed after his lifetime, his influence lingered through the phrases and scenes he left behind. He died in 1873, and today he remains an interesting figure not just as a Victorian storyteller, but as a writer whose words entered everyday culture.
