Description

In a quiet corner of a Flemish village, a cramped cottage clings to the edge of a winding canal. The landscape stretches with endless fields, poplars bending in the wind, and a weather‑worn windmill that still turns despite its creaking limbs. Within the modest walls lives Nello, an orphan boy, and Patras, a shaggy yellow Flemish dog whose steady presence holds the household together.

Both depend on the aging farmer Jean Daas, a humble veteran whose hands are scarred by war yet whose heart is soft for the child and his faithful companion. Their days are marked by the low, mournful chime of the village bell and by simple meals of bread and cabbage, enough to keep hunger at bay but never to fill them with comfort. Patras, strong and tireless, becomes more than a pet; he is the boy’s protector, helper, and the only thread that ties their fragile world to a sense of hope.
