In a quiet temple beside the western wing, a recently widowed mother tends to the memory of her late husband while caring for her bright‑spirited daughter, Yingying. The girl, skilled in poetry and needlework, is promised in marriage to a distant relative, yet the promise is delayed by grief and travel. A clever matchmaker, Hongniang, moves through the corridors, ready to guide the household through the tangled expectations of propriety.
Enter Zhang Gong, a wandering scholar on his way to the capital, who takes shelter at the temple after a long journey. Drawn together by chance, he and Yingying share secret conversations amid the fragrant incense, exchanging verses and gentle teasing. Their growing affection blossoms within the temple’s secluded chambers, while Hongniang’s quick wit and the ever‑present monastic observers add both humor and tension to the unfolding romance.
