Shifu Wang

Little is known for certain about his life, but reliable reference sources describe him as a leading dramatist of the Yuan dynasty, active around the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He is usually associated with Dadu, present-day Beijing, and is often identified by the courtesy name Wang Dexin.

He is famous above all for The Romance of the Western Chamber (Xixiang Ji), one of the best-known plays in the Chinese tradition. The play’s mix of romance, wit, and emotional directness made it enduringly popular, and later generations continued to read, perform, and adapt it.

Sources also credit him with helping expand the possibilities of zaju, the dramatic form of his time. Even where the details of his biography remain uncertain, his literary influence is clear: he stands as one of the defining playwrights of classical Chinese theater.
