Shifu Wang

Wang Shifu was a Chinese playwright of the Yuan dynasty and is most closely associated with The Romance of the Western Chamber (Xi xiang ji), one of the best-known works in the Chinese dramatic tradition. Reference sources consistently describe him as a major dramatist of his era, though basic biographical details such as his exact birth and death years vary across catalogs and encyclopedic sources.

He is generally linked with Dadu, the Yuan capital in what is now Beijing, and is often identified by the courtesy name Wang Dexin. What stands out most clearly is his literary reputation: he is remembered for bringing warmth, elegance, and strong feeling to the stage, especially in romantic storytelling.

Because surviving information about his life is limited and sometimes inconsistent, modern readers usually meet him through his work rather than through a detailed personal history. Even so, his place in Chinese literary history is secure, thanks above all to the enduring fame of The Romance of the Western Chamber.
