Description

A restless scholar driven by a lifelong fascination with rare books, ancient ruins and distant horizons sets out to test his learning against the world itself. After completing his studies, he joins a merchant fleet, only to see his first ship smashed upon the rocky coast of Spain, an abrupt lesson that the sea spares no one from humility. The wreck forces him onto unfamiliar shorelines, where his intellect and curiosity become his only compass.

From the wreckage he journeys to bustling Lisbon, then embarks on a second expedition that takes him further into unknown territories. Along the way he encounters strange peoples, hears their languages and customs, and engages in spirited debates about faith and philosophy that reveal both the strengths and frailties of his own convictions. Encounters with local judges, priests and even a royal court offer a vivid portrait of societies far removed from his native world, while his keen observations turn each encounter into a lesson in humanity.

Through vivid travel narrative and thoughtful reflection, the work invites listeners to share the wonder of discovery and the restless search for meaning that drives every true explorer.

Simon Tyssot de Patot

1655–1738

A Huguenot exile who spent most of his life in the Dutch Republic, he wrote strange, inventive voyages that now look strikingly ahead of later fantasy and science fiction. His work blends satire, travel adventure, and Enlightenment curiosity in ways that still feel fresh.
