Set against the sun‑kissed slopes of the Sila range in September 1510, a bustling fair erupts in the valley of the Crati. Stalls brim with oranges, melons, exotic goods, while the church of the Nativity swells with chants and ringing bells. Merchants and country folk mingle under colourful awnings, and a lone astrologer offers cryptic fortunes to anyone who will pay. The scene hums with the layered rhythms of a vibrant, superstitious Calabria.
Amid the celebration, whispers rise about a dreaded band of outlaws known as the Bocca del Lupo, whose raids have turned the fair into a fragile refuge. A young man named Gennariello watches the murmurs, his curiosity sparked by the old councilor’s lament for a missing king and the uneasy smiles of militia men. As the bell tolls for the evening mass, the fair’s festive veneer begins to crack, hinting that danger may be lurking just beyond the lantern light.
