The story opens on a sweltering summer day in 1297, when the courtyard of a Dutch count’s hunting lodge erupts into chaotic activity. Servants, hunters, craftsmen and nobles mill about, restless and impatient, as rumors of a massive wolf terrorising the surrounding villages spread. The local peasants have begged the count for help; if he refuses, they will organize a frantic wolf hunt themselves, hoping the chaos will work in their favor.
Count Jan, a young and inexperienced heir recently returned from the English court, decides to lead a formal driven hunt to rid the forest of the beast. Though eager to prove himself, he is caught between the expectations of powerful allies, the memory of a slain predecessor, and the simmering resentment of older nobles. Amid the bustling preparations, the count must navigate court intrigue and his own doubts while the looming hunt promises to test his leadership and uncover deeper tensions within the region.
