Description

The book opens with a lively picture of Delft’s once‑squeezed canal turning into a thriving port, where merchants, shipbuilders and families converge beneath the shadow of the Maas. Against a backdrop of the Eighty Years’ War, the narrative shows how the city’s fortunes swing between Spanish raids and the daring raids of the Watergeuzen, setting a restless, almost cinematic stage for the story to unfold. The early chapters blend vivid descriptions of bustling wharves, narrow alleys and the ambitions of a community eager to claim its place on the sea lanes.

Into this world steps a young Piet Heyn, the son of a modest Delft family whose childhood is marked by simple meals, whispered prayers and the ever‑present scent of salt. The author draws on period anecdotes to trace Heyn’s restless energy—from his first encounters with the dockside rhythms to his early, gritty apprenticeship on fishing and trading vessels. As the boy grows, his talent for seamanship and his fierce loyalty to the Dutch cause begin to shape a path that will soon carry him far beyond the quiet streets of Delft.
