The story opens in the chaotic summer of 1573, when the Dutch city of Leiden finds itself caught in the second of two brutal sieges. Amid the clamor of cannon fire and the desperate scramble for supplies, the author paints a vivid picture of a nation under strain, where politics, money, and the wish for freedom collide. By blending factual background with the lived experience of ordinary citizens, the narrative sets the stage for a tale that feels both intimate and epic.
At the heart of the account is a young boat‑boy named Cornelis Joppensz., a member of the bustling guild that ferries goods along the rivers. Eager to prove himself, he petitions the city council to earn his place among the seasoned sailors of Amsterdam, while simultaneously being drawn into the city’s frantic defense. Through his eyes the reader witnesses the everyday courage, small ambitions, and harsh realities that define Leiden’s struggle for survival.
