Description

Set in the rugged Finnish coastline around the year 1200, the drama opens on the windswept fields of the Hanka estate. A small band of Häme settlers has carved out a foothold on the shores of Pähkäselä, while neighboring Karjalainen clans press close, their ambitions sparking a fragile standoff. The cast spans fathers, sons, sisters and slaves, each bearing the weight of tribal loyalties and the promise of wealth that the wild land offers.

The first act begins with a lazy summer morning, as Ennu stretches on the grass while his sister Irja sings outside, their banter laced with sharp jokes about marriage, inheritance and the looming bargain over Irja’s hand. Their dialogue reveals a household strained by greed, the fear of being sold, and the simmering resentment between the Hanka family and the richer, opportunistic Usun and Tuukan households. Listeners will be drawn into the vivid, rustic language and the undercurrent of tension that threatens to erupt into open conflict.
