A small band of Häme folk has taken refuge on the windswept shores of Pähkäselä, where they clash with roaming Karjalainen raiders. The community is dominated by the ruthless Hanka, a greedy old man whose hidden treasure lies beneath the floorboards, and his two daughters, Irja and Ennu, who live under his oppressive rule. Irja, a bright‑hearted Karjala girl, dreams of freedom while fearing the fate her father may sell her into.
When the wealthy, boisterous Tuukka and his brother Orvo arrive from Häme, the atmosphere changes. Tuukka, drawn to Irja’s beauty and spirit, offers her gifts and promises that stir both hope and suspicion among the locals. As the young lovers navigate their growing affection, the fragile balance between the two warring groups hangs in the balance, hinting at a confrontation that could reshape their lives.
