In a quiet Finnish countryside just after the First World War, young Unto waits impatiently beside his grandfather, Antti‑vaari, in the steaming sauna of the Kuusela homestead. The boy has spent months preparing his tiny fishing gear, dreaming of the promised onkimatka – a simple trip to the nearby lake that has become his entire summer. When the old man finally agrees, the pair step out onto a meadow dotted with wildflowers and buzzing flies, the air thick with the scent of fresh pine and damp earth.
The journey quickly turns into a wandering adventure, as the duo follows a winding path that climbs over hills, skirts bubbling streams and passes towering birches that seem to whisper secrets. Unto’s boundless curiosity leads him to ask endless questions about the strange stones on the trail, the lone rabbits, and the hidden melodies of the forest, while his grandfather offers quiet, sometimes puzzled, replies.
Together they discover a world where the ordinary becomes magical, and the simple act of casting a line turns into a rite of passage for the boy. The tale mixes gentle humour with wistful reverie, inviting listeners to feel the quiet thrill of a child’s first steps toward independence.
