The story opens on a dim August night in a modest manor near Helsinki, where the household’s laborers sleep in a shared wing while the house’s own daughter, Laina, lies in a separate room under a watchful but weary caretaker, Marjaana. Laina has been warned by a doctor of a mysterious growth and a fragile heart, forcing her into strict regimens of hot baths and strenuous work, and her occasional sobs echo through the thin walls each evening. As the night deepens, Marjaana catches the sound of Laina’s sudden, unsteady steps and feels an inexplicable urgency pulse through the quiet house.
Compelled by a rising dread, Marjaana slips into the dark garden, stumbling toward the sauna and then the lakeshore, searching for any clue that might explain the frantic cries. The moonlit water reflects a solitary duck, while shadows hint at something far more unsettling lurking just beyond sight. In this tense, atmospheric opening, the listener is drawn into a world where illness, secrecy, and an unsettling presence converge, promising a haunting exploration of fear and duty.
