In a modest Finnish village of the early 1900s, a young man named Heikki finds himself thrust into the quiet turmoil that follows his father's death. The scene opens in the cramped, dimly lit cottage where Heikki must navigate his mother’s grief, the practicalities of burial, and the weight of an inheritance that feels more like a burden than a blessing. The narrative captures the stark everyday rituals—a wooden board placed against the stove, whispered questions about washing the body—and the unsettling sense that the family’s future is already being measured against the hollow eyes of the deceased.
As Heikki wrestles with his own growing sense of duty, he encounters the stern landlord, the local doctor, and the expectations of a community that values perseverance over sentiment. Their conversations, laced with dry humor and fatalistic philosophy, hint at larger questions about legacy, health, and the fragile line between resilience and resignation. The first act sets a tone of quiet resolve, inviting listeners to linger on the delicate balance between tradition and change.
