A clever young woman named Gillette, raised in the court of the Count of Roussillon, is devoted to the son she loves, Bertrand. When the king falls gravely ill with a mysterious ailment, she travels to Paris, confident that the medical knowledge inherited from her father can save his life. The monarch promises her a marriage to the most noble and wealthy suitor of her choosing if she succeeds, and Gillette’s cure earns her the king’s gratitude.
Encouraged by the promise, Gillette asks for Bertrand, only to find the proud count offended by the idea of a union beneath his rank. The king’s command forces the couple into an uneasy marriage, and soon Bertrand departs for war in Tuscany, leaving Gillette to devise a daring plan. Disguised as a pilgrim, she infiltrates Florence, weaving a web of ruses that keep her hope alive while testing the limits of loyalty and ambition.
The play unfolds with Shakespeare’s characteristic wit, lively banter, and a lively cast that includes a blustering soldier and a scheming courtier. Its comic twists highlight themes of love, deception, and the surprising ways fortunes can turn, making the story a lively and engaging listen from the very first act.

A playwright, poet, and actor from Stratford-upon-Avon, he created characters and lines that have stayed alive for more than four centuries. His stories of love, ambition, jealousy, power, and forgiveness still feel startlingly human.
