Description

The expedition winds its way along the banks of the Cconi, threading through dense jungle and the shadow of the Basiri mountains. After parting from the French traveler Paul Marcoy, the party—led by a colonel, the forester Pepe Garcia, and a group of Bolivian cascarilleros—sets camp on a quiet riverine plain, surrounded by modest thatched shelters and the faint traces of jaguars and other wildlife. The narrative captures the raw beauty of the landscape, the careful preparations for a night in the wilderness, and the subtle tension that builds as the explorers settle into an unfamiliar world.

At dawn, an unexpected chorus of cries shatters the calm, and a group of Chunchos emerges from the reeds, their presence both startling and oddly welcoming. Their language—an intriguing blend of Spanish and Quechua—sparks a tentative dialogue, hinting at cultural misunderstandings and hidden curiosities. The early encounter sets the tone for a journey where the line between danger and discovery is as fluid as the river itself.
