About the author

Born in Bordeaux on October 22, 1815, Paul Marcoy was the pen name of Laurent de Saint-Cricq, a French painter, explorer, and travel writer. He spent many years in South America, where he traveled widely through the Andes and the Amazon regions, gathering the experiences that shaped his books and illustrated travel narratives.

Marcoy became known for describing the places he visited in lively detail, combining the curiosity of an explorer with the eye of an artist. His best-known work, A Journey Across South America, helped introduce readers to the landscapes, peoples, and customs he encountered during his long travels.

He died in Bordeaux on November 6, 1887. Although not as famous today as some other nineteenth-century travelers, his writing remains valuable for its mix of firsthand observation, storytelling, and visual imagination.
