A restless orphan named Toby wanders the streets of his small town, dreaming of a life beyond the cramped attic he shares with a stern deacon who calls himself “Uncle Dan.” When the travelling circus rolls in, its bright banners and bustling crew ignite his imagination, and on a whim he slips away to become part of the spectacle. The opening hours are a whirlwind of new sights—clowns, acrobats, and the tantalising smell of caramel‑coated popcorn—leaving him both exhilarated and uncertain about the road ahead.
Inside the big top, Toby is taken under the wing of a kindly strong‑man who teaches him the basics of performance and the unspoken rules of circus camaraderie. He discovers that life on the road demands hard work, quick thinking, and a willingness to trade his own hunger for the joy of the audience. As he navigates the colorful yet demanding world of the troupe, Toby begins to find a place where his endless appetite for adventure finally feels at home.
