Description

In the spring of 1775, the quiet town of Pittsfield awakens to the thunder of news from Lexington and Concord. A small contingent of seasoned men arrives, bearing the promise of a daring expedition to seize the strategic fort at Ticonderoga, and the whole community buzzes with talk of patriotism, money, and marching orders. Amid the excitement, fourteen‑year‑old Isaac Rice dreams of joining the cause, and he looks to the town’s most respected veteran, Corporal Elijah “Lige” Watkins, for guidance.

Corporal Lige, a grizzled veteran of the French‑Indian wars, patiently explains the realities of military life, reminding Isaac that bravery must be tempered with prudence. The narrative follows the town’s hurried preparations—meetings in taverns, the clatter of weapons being readied, and the rumor‑filled streets where every citizen weighs the cost of rebellion. As the first recruits set out toward the New York frontier, the reader is drawn into a vivid portrait of ordinary people thrust onto the stage of a fledgling nation.
