Toby is a restless ten‑year‑old who feels cramped by the chores and expectations of his country home. One night he slips away, lured by the bright lights, music, and promise of adventure heard from a traveling circus passing through town. The moment he steps inside the big top, the scent of popcorn and the roar of the crowd convince him he has found a world far different from the farm.
During his first weeks he trades his pocket money for tickets, learns the rhythm of the performers and meets a colorful crew of workers, from a cantankerous clown to a gentle, bone‑handed skeleton. Toby discovers that circus life is not all applause; he faces mishaps, a counterfeit coin, and the constant need to prove his worth. Yet the camaraderie and the chance to ride a horse for the first time give him a taste of independence he has never known.
