Description

Set against the raw wilderness of the Hudson's Bay frontier, the story follows a Scottish farming family as they trade rolling hills for the untamed plains of the New World. Father Andrew, mother Kirstie, their teenage son Hector, little sister Ailie, and two spirited sheepdogs—steady Dour and lively Dandy—arrive at York Factory after a cramped, grub‑laden voyage. The first days are a mix of clumsy excitement and fierce new sounds, as the children explore the bustling fort and the dogs test their newfound freedom.

Quickly, Hector steps into the role his parents expect of him, guiding Ailie through the sand‑strewn beaches and learning the rhythms of hunting and river life. The narrative captures his awe of the massive black bear, his rivalry with the clever dog, and the first cold plunge into icy waters that marks his passage from boy to pioneer. With vivid descriptions of prairie skies, drifting canoes, and the promise of buffalo trails, the early chapters set a lively stage for the adventures that lie ahead.
