Description

Set in the expanding timber frontier of late‑19th‑century Canada, the story follows Frank Kingston, a bright‑eyed boy from the tiny village of Calumet. When his mother tells him school must give way to work, he eagerly declares he will follow his father's trade as a woodsman. The narrative paints the gradual transformation of wild forest into bustling settlements, giving a vivid sense of the land’s beauty and the pressures of progress.

Frank is portrayed as sturdy, quick‑witted, and good‑natured, with a temper that flares but cools just as fast. Raised by a devout mother and visited monthly by a travelling minister, his moral compass is firmly set, shaping his interactions with friends and rivals alike. As the village expands, Frank’s desire to prove himself as a capable lumber‑hand begins to test his resolve and his ties to home.
