Description

Set against the gritty backdrop of 1799 Atlantic travel, the story follows fifteen‑year‑old Eric Copeland, a spirited English lad determined to join his father, a surgeon with the Seventh Fusiliers, in distant Nova Scotia. The novel opens with a spirited debate at Oakdene Manor, where the family patriarch reluctantly encourages the boy’s ambition despite fears of untamed wilderness and unknown dangers. Eric’s fierce resolve and youthful energy hint at the perilous journey that lies ahead, as ocean voyages of the era were anything but comfortable.

Soon the Copeland convoy sets sail on a clumsy, wind‑laden ship, navigating treacherous currents toward the infamous Sable Island, a graveyard of wrecks whispered about by sailors. As the vessel approaches the desolate sands, ominous rumors of local wreckers—men who prey on stranded crews for profit—begin to surface, casting a shadow over the young explorer’s hopes. The narrative balances vivid historical detail with a growing sense of suspense, inviting listeners to imagine the harsh sea, the looming danger, and the boy’s steadfast courage.
