Description

In the cramped, soot‑stained alleys of Halifax, a scrappy boy named Terry Ahearn makes his way through a world of tenements, breweries, and relentless street noise. When his friend Patsy's treasured toy is snatched, Terry steps into a chaotic street brawl, his small frame belying a fierce determination that wins the crowd’s sympathy. The fight is broken up only by the sudden arrival of police, leaving the boys scattered like ghosts and the stolen plaything still out of reach.

Beyond the fight, Terry’s life unfolds in Blind Alley, a narrow passage of rundown houses that borders a malt‑laden brewery. He lives in a two‑room loft with a father whose temper flares as often as the tavern’s fire, and a mother who scrubs and scrounges to keep food on the table. Amid the clamor of shouting mothers and the ever‑present threat of poverty, Terry learns to survive with wit and resilience, hinting at the larger struggles and small victories that will shape his future.
