Description

A bitter wind sweeps across the prairie, rattling the windows of a small Saskatchewan town as a storm churns the nearby river. Inside the smoky poolroom, threshermen swap stories and wagers, the air thick with tobacco and tension. When the hot‑headed McClure taunts the stoic farmhand Ned Pullar with a high‑stakes bet, the room erupts in jeers. Yet Pullar remains unmoved, his steady gaze cutting through the chaos.

Pullar, a rugged laborer with a quiet confidence, refuses to be drawn into the reckless gamble, sensing the danger lurking behind the drunken crowd. As the gang closes in, a lone outsider slips out the back, offering a brief chance for Pullar to regroup. The scene sets the stage for a larger conflict that will test Pullar’s resolve, his loyalty to the Valley Outfit, and his emerging sense of purpose.

Beyond the tavern’s glare, the vast Saskatchewan landscape beckons, promising both hardship and hope. As Pullar prepares to leave for the Craggs, his quiet determination hints at a journey that will intertwine personal ambition with the fate of his community.
