About the author

Born in London in 1912, David Armine Howarth became known as a British historian and author with an unusual gift for turning real events into page-turning narrative. Before and during World War II, he worked as a BBC radio war correspondent and later joined the Royal Navy.

His wartime service deeply shaped his writing. He was involved with Special Operations Executive work linked to Norway and helped set up the Shetland Bus, the risky wartime route between Shetland and occupied Norway. That experience later fed into some of his most memorable books, including The Shetland Bus and We Die Alone.

Howarth went on to write roughly two dozen major history books, often focusing on war, exploration, and dramatic turning points in the past. Readers still return to his work for its clear storytelling, strong sense of place, and respect for the ordinary people at the center of extraordinary events.
