Description

On a sweltering early‑summer afternoon the Limited rolls from Chicago to Boston, carrying two eleven‑year‑olds whose lives could not be more different. One glides in a black silk frock, clutching a vanity bag, a box of chocolates and a pair of polished onyx‑buckled sandals—her air of quiet elegance suggests a world of small privileges and hidden sorrows. The other, a serious girl with a knitted red coat and a mute doll named Mildred, sits facing the engine, her faded gingham dress and well‑worn suitcase hinting at modest means and a yearning for adventure.

As the train shudders along the tracks, the two girls catch each other’s eyes, and a silent curiosity builds between them. Their brief, tense exchange foreshadows a friendship that may bridge class, family secrets, and the mysteries nestled in the carriage’s shadows. Listeners will be drawn into the delicate dance of innocence, intrigue, and the promise of unexpected companionship that only a long journey can reveal.
