Description

A young man of sixteen, Hugh Gwyeth, wanders the sun‑dappled terraces of his family’s manor, caught between the restless games of children and the urgent meetings of his elders planning a defense against royal forces. The novel opens with Hugh’s sharp observations of the countryside, his restless energy, and the simmering tension that grips the region as war looms on the horizon. Through his eyes we glimpse a world on the brink—farmers, soldiers, and gentry all wrestling with loyalty, duty, and the promise of conflict.

As Hugh watches the strategizing of his grandfather and local leaders, his desire to prove himself grows stronger, prompting him to question where his place truly lies. The story follows his tentative steps toward a destiny that could see him trading the idle toss of a ball for the weight of a sword. With vivid period detail and a keen sense of youthful ambition, the narrative captures the uneasy calm before England’s turbulent clash of Roundheads and Cavaliers.
