Description

Soldier Rigdale is a young, restless recruit who finds himself aboard the famed Mayflower as it cuts through the Atlantic toward an unknown shore. The narrative captures his uneasy awe as the ship rolls beneath towering masts, his banter with fellow passengers, and the dawning realization that the New World will demand more than courage alone. Through his eyes we glimpse the cramped decks, the early glimpses of pine‑clad coastlines, and the whispered rumors of encounters with the indigenous peoples.

When the vessel finally grounds, Rigdale is pressed into the service of Captain Miles Standish, the colony’s military leader, and thrust into the harsh reality of building a settlement from scratch. The book follows his daily labors—cutting timber, fetching water, confronting illness, and navigating the fragile alliances between Pilgrims and the nearby Native villages. With a blend of gritty detail and moments of unexpected camaraderie, the story paints a vivid portrait of early colonial life and the personal trials of a man trying to find his place in a world far from home.
