APPENDIX II. - A SKETCH OF THE HISTORY OF KONGO - TO THE - end of the seventeenth century. - The Early History of Kongo.
An English seaman captured by the Portuguese in South America finds himself shipped to the wild coast of Angola, where his fortunes turn from privateer to prisoner. Battell’s early days are marked by forced labor, uneasy trade, and a daring but failed escape that lands him in a harsher confinement. Through his eyes we hear the clamor of the bustling ports and the grim routine of captivity, setting a vivid stage for the unknown lands beyond the shoreline.
Beyond the coastal forts, Battell ventures inland, encountering fierce warrior groups he calls the Gagas, whose customs and violent feuds seem both alien and compelling. He records their rites, their fierce battles, and the everyday life of peoples rarely seen by Europeans at the time. The narrative offers a rare glimpse into early 17th‑century Angola and the Congo interior, blending personal hardship with careful observation of cultures that would remain obscure for centuries.

A tough, observant English traveler whose years in Angola and Loango became one of the most valuable early eyewitness accounts of Central Africa. His story mixes captivity, survival, and close-up reporting from a world most English readers of his time had never seen.
