Description

A convoy of riverboats and canoes slides from the mighty Mississippi into the vast, silent waters the Native peoples call “The Beautiful River.” The Ohio stretches wide and deep, its banks cloaked in towering forests that whisper of hidden dangers. In the lead boat sit seasoned frontier men—Henry, Paul, and their companion Shif’less—still riding the after‑glow of a hard‑won battle on the lower Mississippi, while silent Tom and Long Jim round out the group. Their camaraderie is laced with a shared respect for the river’s power and the fierce tribes—Shawnee, Miami, Wyandot—who guard its course.

As the fleet pauses to take in the meeting of the two great rivers, the men feel both awe and foreboding. Henry’s thoughts drift to the long trek ahead to Pittsburgh, where supplies are desperately needed, while Paul’s eyes scan the forested horizon for any sign of danger. Their conversation reveals a mix of youthful optimism and seasoned caution, setting the stage for an adventure where the wilderness itself becomes a formidable opponent.
