Description

A clever wartime ruse comes alive aboard a modest motor launch, where the ordinary routine of letters, cigarettes and odd interruptions masks a deadly game of cat‑and‑mouse. Sub‑lieutenant Kenneth Meredith and his lanky Scottish counterpart, Jock McIntosh, find themselves thrust into the shadowy world of the British “Q” ships—merchant vessels fitted with hidden armaments, bait for the prowling German U‑boats. Their banter and the cramped, noisy quarters give a vivid glimpse of life on the North Sea patrol, while the ever‑present threat of an unseen enemy keeps the tension humming beneath every mundane task.

As the crew prepares for the next rendezvous, the narrative blends crisp period detail with the nervous anticipation of a trap being set. Early confrontations hint at the razor‑thin line between daring stratagem and peril, promising a tale that balances wry camaraderie with the stark realities of naval warfare.
