1861–1929

Best known for vivid paintings of life in Algeria, this French artist brought unusual closeness and respect to scenes that many European painters treated from a distance. He later took the name Nasreddine Dinet and also wrote about North African life and culture.

Sliman Ben Ibrahim

An Algerian essayist from Bou Saâda, he is best remembered for writing about Arab and Islamic culture in close collaboration with painter Étienne Dinet. His work helped bring Saharan stories and the life of the Prophet Muhammad to French-speaking readers.
