About the author

Born in Paris in 1861, Étienne Dinet was a French painter and writer best known for his Orientalist work. He traveled repeatedly to Algeria, and those visits became central to his art, shaping paintings that focused on local people, landscapes, and daily life rather than distant fantasy.

Over time, Algeria became more than a subject for him. He settled for long periods in Bou Saâda, developed close ties there, and eventually converted to Islam, taking the name Nasreddine Dinet. He was also associated with the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français.

Dinet died in Paris in 1929, but his work remains closely linked with Algeria and with a more lived-in, personal approach to Orientalist painting. Alongside his paintings, he also wrote books, helping leave behind a record of both his art and the world that inspired it.
