About the author

Born in Paris in 1861, Étienne Dinet studied art in France and began exhibiting in the 1880s. Visits to Algeria changed the course of his life and work, and he eventually settled for long periods in Bou Saâda, where everyday life, landscapes, and local traditions became central to his painting.

He is often grouped with Orientalist painters, but his work is frequently noted for its stronger personal connection to the people and places he painted. Over time he learned Arabic, converted to Islam, and became known as Nasreddine Dinet, reflecting how deeply Algeria had shaped his life.

Alongside painting, he also published and translated books connected to North African and Islamic culture. He died in 1929, and his work remains a distinctive part of both French art history and the visual record of Algeria in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
