Description

In the winter of 1868 the narrator recalls a conversation that launches a tale of loyalty and loss set against the chaos of post‑Revolutionary France. Born to a proud Brécourt line, his mother clings to royalist ideals while his father, a humble painter‑engraver, risks everything for the fallen monarchy. When the father disappears during the desperate flight of the Chouans, the family is left to navigate fear, uncertainty, and a world reshaped by Bonaparte’s rule.

Seeking shelter, the widowed mother accepts an invitation from the enigmatic Madame de Combray, who offers a remote house near her grand château at Tournebut d’Aubevoye. The journey through dense woods and steep roads mirrors the family's turbulent emotions, and the first night in the austere yet welcoming rooms introduces a cast of loyal servants and curious acquaintances. As the seasons change, the household becomes a quiet stage where old allegiances and new secrets begin to surface, hinting at the trials that will test both devotion and survival.
