Description

The story opens on the bustling first day at Baxter High, where the Second Form— the school’s elite class— dominates the stair‑filled courtyard. Four boisterous seniors, known by nicknames like Taffy, Soda, Lefty and Buttons, rally their followers and set the tone for the year’s social hierarchy. Into this lively scene steps a lanky newcomer, James Appleby Bronson, clutching a stack of books and a nervous smile, instantly labeled “Clothespin” by the senior pranksters.

Bronson’s earnest desire to join the Second Form quickly collides with the seniors’ teasing rituals and an unspoken code of “formalities” he must satisfy. As the younger pupils watch, the newcomer finds himself balancing the pressure to prove his worth with the growing curiosity about the group’s hidden dynamics. The early chapters set the stage for a classic rivalry, where alliances are tested, friendships begin to form, and the true meaning of respect at Baxter High hangs in the balance.
