Description

In the quiet hills of southwestern Ohio, two sturdy brothers race home after a long day of school and sport. Sixteen‑year‑old Larry and his younger brother Tom are the pride of their farm, known for their strength, quick wit, and love of ball games. As twilight deepens, the boys push themselves faster, hoping to beat dinner and avoid the dreaded “no‑play” punishment from their father.

Their hurried sprint takes a sudden turn when a low, menacing growl rises from the nearby swamp. A massive black wolf—an escaped circus animal—lunges onto the road, its hungry eyes fixed on the unsuspecting pair. With instinct and sibling teamwork, the boys must confront the wild threat, setting the stage for the daring escapades that will define their early years on the plains.

A house name rather than a single person, this byline belonged to the Stratemeyer Syndicate, the powerhouse behind many early 20th-century adventure books for young readers. The Frank V. Webster novels are brisk, wholesome stories packed with school rivalries, outdoor exploits, and underdog grit.
