Description

When the midnight alarm cries “Fire! Fire!” the quiet New England village of Lakeville erupts into frantic activity. In the glow of a burning barn, a teenage boy named Herbert—known as Bert to his friends—wrestles with his mother’s worries and his own urge to help. Determined to join the bucket brigade despite the danger, he scrambles into whatever clothing he can find and rushes out into the smoky night.

Bert soon discovers that fighting a blaze is more than just hauling water; it calls for quick thinking, teamwork, and a dash of daring. Alongside the village constable and a handful of eager youngsters, he learns to coordinate the flow of buckets, keep the fire lines steady, and stay alert for runaway horses. The early hours of the fire test his courage and resourcefulness, showing how a single motivated teen can become a vital part of a community’s fight against disaster.
