Description

A young American student named John finds himself in the shadow of the Sistine Madonna, more fascinated by the quiet awe of the painting than the lecture that surrounds it. As Europe teeters on the brink of war, his wandering eyes capture the uneasy calm of Vienna, Munich, and London, each city humming with the tense preparations of armies that will soon roar across the continent. Through his observant yet hesitant perspective, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a world on the edge, where culture and conflict intersect in the most unexpected ways.

When John travels to the front, the story shifts from marble galleries to the clang of artillery, the thrum of zeppelins, and the desperate scramble of soldiers on shattered trenches. He meets a cast of determined officers and weary civilians, each grappling with duty, fear, and the fragile hope that art and humanity might survive the coming storm. Their intertwined journeys offer a human‑scaled view of a global catastrophe, inviting listeners to feel the pulse of early World War I through eyes that yearn for peace even as the guns begin to speak.
