Description

This volume brings together the original registers, minutes and decrees of Scotland’s Reformed Church from the tumultuous years 1560‑1616. Compiled in 1839 from surviving manuscripts, it preserves the raw Middle‑Scots spelling and typographic quirks—yogh, the occasional ł, and the jumble of z and ȝ—that give listeners a genuine sense of the period’s written voice. Footnotes and editorial notes explain the calendar differences and missing passages, so the text remains both faithful and approachable.

The preface tells a dramatic tale of loss and rediscovery: the records were once hidden, examined by a Parliamentary committee in 1834, and then vanished in the great fire that consumed the Houses of Parliament. What survives are the early Acts and proceedings that illuminate the fierce struggles between church leaders and the Crown, offering a vivid window onto the birth of Scottish Presbyterianism. For anyone curious about religious reform, legal history, or the texture of 16th‑century Scottish life, this collection is an unusually tangible link to a formative era.
