Description

A fog‑laden winter night drapes over St. Petersburg as a weary correspondent wanders the bustling Nevski Prospekt, seeking warmth in a brightly lit restaurant. There he encounters a striking, aristocratic young woman whose eyes hold a chilling stillness, and a brooding companion whose urgent whispers hint at a hidden transgression. Their brief, tense exchange leaves the narrator haunted by the promise of a “terrible crime” and a sense that something far larger is unfolding beneath the city’s glittering façade.

Drawn into the shadowy world of political dissent, the narrator receives a cryptic summons from a radical faction that promises both danger and purpose. As snowflakes swirl over the Anitchkoff Bridge, the line between imagination and reality blurs, pulling him deeper into a maze of secret meetings and whispered conspiracies. Listeners will be swept along the icy streets, feeling the cold breath of intrigue and the uneasy anticipation of what lies ahead.

William Le Queux

A master of early spy thrillers, he turned invasion fears, secret plots, and international intrigue into hugely popular fiction. His life as a journalist, traveler, and tireless self-promoter was almost as dramatic as his books.
